This clock roughly illustrates what we see as a likely future for oyster harvesting in the May River. Its countdown time, while listed precisely, is only an estimate based on information we have.
Oyster harvesting has been prohibited in the river’s headwaters for the past decade. But water testing of the river – while more limited than we might prefer – suggests fecal coliform levels rise dramatically after major rainstorms in at least one other section of the May, just upstream from the Bluffton Oyster Company.
Recently, we were told by a local expert on the river that we can expect additional oyster bed closures within two years. This countdown clock aims to show how that timeline plays out.
